Argentine President Javier Milei has intensified the long-standing Falklands dispute with Britain. He recently suggested a significant change could be coming in the United States’ position on the islands. Such a move would alter Washington’s years-long neutrality regarding the territory.
Milei stated his country would impose sanctions on any oil companies operating within the British overseas territory. During a nationally televised address, he reaffirmed Argentina’s claim that the Falkland Islands are an integral part of its sovereign territory. This assertive stance could further escalate tensions with Britain.
The Argentine leader praised past comments from US President Donald Trump. Trump had hinted at the US potentially reconsidering its largely neutral position on the Falklands. Milei attributed this potential shift to his close relationship with the former US president.
Milei believes the US is contemplating this change because Argentina stands as a “reliable partner.” He emphasized Argentina’s alignment with “Western values,” describing it as a potentially “valuable ally in the decades to come.”
Moreover, Milei announced several measures to impede the Sea Lion oil project. This project is situated approximately 140 miles from the islands. Argentina considers this entire area its own jurisdiction.
Two companies, one from the UK and one from Israel, plan to commence drilling in the coming months. Their goal is oil production by 2028. “Argentina will not stand idly by,” Milei warned, adding that any further advance on the Islands would constitute a “violation of our national security.”
The Falklands dispute remains a rare point of national consensus within Argentine society. This unity persists despite deep political divisions on other domestic issues.
Meanwhile, a British government spokesperson affirmed the UK’s position as “long-standing and unwavering.” The spokesperson emphasized that “Sovereignty rests with the UK.” Furthermore, “the islanders’ right to self-determination is paramount.”
Any alteration in the US’s neutral approach could represent a major geopolitical shift. As a result, this might contribute to further deterioration in already strained transatlantic relations. Trump previously stated he “always” reviews positions when asked about the Falklands.
In another interview, Trump was questioned on whether the US would aid Britain in an armed conflict over the islands. He responded that Britain “was not there to help me.” This comment referred to the UK’s previous refusal to actively participate in a joint US-Israeli campaign against Iran.
