Millions of visitors descend upon Munich each year for the iconic Oktoberfest. This renowned 191st festival, running from September 19th to October 4th, promises lively crowds and abundant beer. However, those seeking a more budget-friendly experience can find several excellent options for cheaper Bavarian beer throughout the region this September.
A single day at Oktoberfest can easily exceed €100. A litre of beer, for example, costs between €14.80 and €15.90 this year. Consequently, many locals and budget-conscious travellers seek out more affordable and authentic celebrations.
Fortunately, Bavaria hosts numerous ‘folk’ or ‘autumn’ festivals, known locally as Volksfeste, Herbstfeste, or Dulten. These events provide a more intimate experience. Moreover, they offer significantly cheaper Bavarian beer and a glimpse into traditional culture without the massive crowds or high prices of Munich’s main event.
One such option is Gillamoos in Abensberg, near Ingolstadt. This festival is considered one of Bavaria’s oldest, boasting a history of over 700 years. It runs for five days, from Thursday, September 3rd, to Monday, September 7th.
Visitors to the Kuchlbauer tent here can purchase a litre of beer for €12.70. Interestingly, Monday morning features speeches from prominent Bavarian politicians. Therefore, early morning visitors might encounter a different kind of spectacle.
Further afield, the Herbstfest Erding, located just outside Munich, is the third-largest beer festival in Upper Bavaria. This year, it takes place from August 28th to September 6th. A litre of beer in its tents costs €12.40, offering a noticeable saving.
Meanwhile, Nuremberg hosts its Autumn Folk Festival until September 13th. Held twice annually, this event serves as the Franconian capital’s answer to Munich’s festivities. It offers a more casual atmosphere; traditional attire is less common here.
Prices for a litre of beer at Nuremberg’s spring festival were around €11.90 or €12. Similar pricing is expected for the autumn edition. The festival features a large beer tent, smaller gardens, and numerous carnival rides for family enjoyment.
The Rosenheim Autumn Festival also welcomes guests from August 29th to September 13th. It showcases grand marquees, a traditional costume parade, and various attractions. Beer prices here stand at €13.60 at the Flötzinger marquee and €13.40 at Auerbräu, reflecting slight increases from last year.
The folk festival in Freising runs from September 4th to 13th. Its main tent, the Luitpoldanlage, sees new management this year, promising an array of local foods. The price for a litre of beer is set to increase to €12.40.
Finally, the Herbstdult in Regensburg continues until September 13th. This festival blends a classic Bavarian atmosphere with a popular market. A Festbiermaß, or litre of festival beer, costs €13.30, providing another option for a truly enjoyable experience.
