Péter Magyar, a formidable new figure in the Hungarian political landscape, recently declared that his country had become a ‘hostage state.’ This bold assertion follows his rapid rise as a significant challenger to Viktor Orbán, Europe’s longest-serving head of government. Mr. Magyar emphasizes the importance of direct voter engagement for political success. He states leaders must “go to them, look them in the eye, you have to listen to them” to earn trust.

Two years ago, Mr. Magyar was largely unknown politically. He had previously been associated with Orbán’s Fidesz party, however, he later distanced himself from the established system. His journey into mainstream politics began unexpectedly. In February 2024, an online interview garnered nearly three million views, which genuinely surprised him.

Subsequently, one month later, he organized a significant demonstration against corruption and cronyism. This event drew approximately 50,000 attendees. Just three weeks after that initial protest, the numbers surged dramatically to 200,000 participants. This substantial increase in public support marked a pivotal moment in his burgeoning movement.

Despite facing immense challenges from Orbán’s pervasive control over media and state institutions, Mr. Magyar remained initially skeptical about securing a victory. He questioned whether a significant majority could truly be achieved against such powerful headwinds. Nevertheless, his outlook shifted considerably. He recalls becoming truly optimistic about his movement’s potential in the second half of 2025. This newfound conviction solidified his belief in overcoming the entrenched political system and reshaping the Hungarian political landscape.
