A new decree confirms Russia seizes Metro assets. Russian authorities announced Monday the temporary administration of the German wholesaler and food retailer’s operations. This action marks the latest in a series of business takeovers targeting companies from nations that support Ukraine.

President Vladimir Putin signed the official decree. It specifically places Metro Cash and Carry’s Russian division under “temporary management.” UK Torg RUS, a designated company, will now oversee these operations. This development means Russia seizes Metro assets. It follows a broader trend of Moscow asserting control over foreign enterprises.

Previously this month, similar actions were taken. Moscow seized businesses and assets belonging to Swiss food giant Nestle. French retailer Auchan and the former Leroy Merlin DIY chain also faced similar takeovers. These moves highlight a pattern of state intervention.

Metro’s operations in Russia were significant. The company reported sales of 2.6 billion euros in the 2024/2025 financial year. Furthermore, Metro’s Russian group companies held substantial cash reserves. As of June 30, these cash and cash equivalents amounted to 152 million euros.

Many Western companies quickly exited Russia after the Ukraine conflict began. They either sold their holdings or isolated their operations. Sanctions imposed by various countries made trade difficult. However, some firms chose to remain, citing concerns for their employees.

Other companies scaled back operations considerably. Russia, meanwhile, has made departures increasingly difficult. Firms now require presidential authorization for any deals. Alternatively, their assets can be seized outright. This latest takeover underscores Moscow’s hardening stance against companies from “unfriendly” states.
