Violent clashes have significantly intensified across France as student protests escalated this week. Authorities confirmed over 600 arrests on Wednesday alone. This highlights the growing unrest gripping the nation’s high schools.

Dozens more, including security personnel and students, sustained injuries. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez condemned what he termed an “escalation of violence.” He noted 83 police officers and gendarmes were wounded on Wednesday. Additionally, 32 teachers and pupils also suffered injuries.

The protests affected 356 schools nationwide. Minister Nunez slammed the “targeting of law enforcement officers” and acts of “urban violence.” These included throwing projectiles, verbal abuse, and attempted arson.

Teenagers have been blockading their schools since last week. They are protesting various issues. Overcrowded classes, heavy workloads, and poor-quality learning materials top their list of grievances. Teacher shortages also contribute to the discontent.

Moreover, students report dire school conditions. One 17-year-old student described widespread cockroaches and rats. Classroom temperatures could also swing wildly, she added.

The movement began in the Ile-de-France region, near Paris. However, it has since spread to other areas. Bordeaux, Lyon, and Lille were among the worst-affected cities on Wednesday. Police notably used tear gas during clashes in Lille.

President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged the students’ legitimate concerns. Nevertheless, he asserted that these concerns could not justify violence. He specifically mentioned attacks on police officers and teachers. High schools, he stated, should foster knowledge, not face blockades or burning trash cans.

Both Macron and Nunez accused far-left groups of inciting violence. Nunez highlighted individuals acting as agitators. He noted they moved between schools to stir up students and encourage violent acts.

Meanwhile, officials denounced the left-wing La France Insoumise (LFI) party. They specifically criticized its leader, Jean-Luc Melenchon. They argued his rhetoric was stoking students’ anger. Melenchon had earlier accused the government of a “crackdown” with “obvious racist undertones.” He urged LFI activists to support the French student protests.

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu called Melenchon’s racism accusation “an insult.” He accused the politician of “racializing a debate about student security.” Lecornu emphasized the need for calm from responsible politicians.
