Malian military forces have successfully retaken the strategic northern town of Kidal. This Mali’s Kidal recapture follows an offensive supported by Russian paramilitary units. The move offers a significant symbolic boost for the military government.

Tuareg separatists, allied with al-Qaeda-linked jihadists, withdrew from the area. The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) stated its forces conducted a “strategic and controlled withdrawal.” Moreover, the FLA reported no direct fighting occurred during this process.

An FLA spokesperson cited “disproportionate use of aerial assets” by Russian mercenaries, specifically from the Africa Corps. This air power reportedly compelled the separatist withdrawal. Mali’s junta increasingly relies on Russian support in its campaigns.

Earlier this year, in April, the FLA and Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) had seized Kidal. These attacks also led to the death of Mali’s defense minister. Tuareg separatists have long sought an independent state in northern Mali.

Analysts view the latest advance as largely a symbolic victory for Mali’s junta. Beverly Ochieng, an associate director at Control Risks, noted this success “affirms the military-led government’s authority.” Furthermore, it “boosts the army’s morale.”

However, Ochieng emphasized that Mali’s Kidal recapture is “symbolic” rather than “decisive.” The overall campaign against jihadist and separatist groups continues. Human rights organizations have also raised concerns about civilian casualties during military operations, with all sides facing accusations of war crimes.
