Germany’s fragile coalition government is grappling with mounting internal pressure. Conservatives are intensifying demands on their center-left partners to enact promised pension and labor market reforms. This ongoing dispute raises fears of a potential government collapse.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democrats (CDU) could block a Social Democrat (SPD)-backed tax reform. This tactic aims to force concessions on the key reforms. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier reportedly intervened, expressing concerns about the coalition’s survival and a possible political crisis.

Meanwhile, the automotive giant Volkswagen has sparked outrage with its latest cost-cutting measures. The IG Metall union has accused the company of disrespectfully handling plans to scrap critical labor agreements. VW intends to eliminate an additional 50,000 jobs worldwide, impacting several German plants.

Beyond the political infighting, Germany marked Unity Day with various events and protests. In Bremen, Antifa demonstrators rallied against the state, while in Berlin, hundreds protested potential compulsory military service and increased defense spending. Elsewhere, authorities conducted raids targeting neo-Nazi music, seizing thousands of recordings and assets.

The economic outlook remains uncertain despite improved forecasts. The foreign trade association BGA warned that bureaucracy still hinders business competitiveness. Deutsche Bahn also struggles with punctuality, as nearly half of its long-distance trains were late in September due to an aging network and extensive construction.

Adding to the business woes, department store chain Galeria has filed for insolvency for the fourth time. This puts approximately 12,000 jobs at risk. These challenges underscore a period of significant political and economic instability across Germany.
