A small, red backpack sits discreetly in a Seattle student apartment. This is Cerberus’s “go-bag,” packed with essentials for an urgent departure. Flashlight, pocketknife, and a first-aid kit are included. Moreover, the 22-year-old’s passport is tucked inside, ready for a swift exit from the United States. Many Transgender Americans flee or consider fleeing the country due to perceived threats.

Cerberus, a library science student, lives here with their partner, Fin. However, orderliness is not always a priority in their shared University District home. The backpack’s contents, by contrast, are meticulously chosen. It represents a stark reality for Cerberus and others in the transgender community.

Cerberus is a transgender woman from Texas, a deeply conservative state. She previously left her childhood home in Allen as she neared her 18th birthday. At that time, she moved to Denton to attend the University of North Texas. There, she began taking estrogen as part of her transition.

This move was an earlier attempt to escape mounting anti-transgender bigotry. Nevertheless, the sentiment now feels nationwide. Cerberus explains that the federal government, in her view, makes it clear that people like her are unwelcome. They often feel their existence is unrecognized, forcing many to consider why Transgender Americans flee.

The prepared go-bag underlines a deep concern for personal safety and rights. Activists, meanwhile, continue to fight for change. For instance, a demonstration for transgender rights is planned in front of the Supreme Court in January 2026. This gathering highlights the ongoing struggle for recognition and equality across the nation.
